I've been curious about the characteristics of New York's Lemberger, Vincent and Dornfelder varieties. Good write-up and thanks for the insight. ~Pamela

Evan: Full disclosure: The lemberger was on sale (2006, probably trying to get rid of it) and the other 6 i bought to make up a 1/2 case discount. I knew I was in for a few after I liked the first 3 in a row I tasted....

Lenn: I have to admit, I bought the Vincent not because I was intrigued or seduced by the sample that I had, but because I've been meaning to try some red varietal hybrids lately. I think I have seen varietals of DeChaunac, Vincent, Leon Millot, Noiret, Frontenac, Foch, Chancellor, Chambourcin, and of course Baco. I want to get to know these red workhorses better individually, and this Vincent is a good start. Basically, I was going to buy it anyway, just to give it a shot at home.

Re: red vinifera, I hate when people say yeah FLX wines are ok, except the reds. Many people make terrible reds, it's true, but some are very good and those producers who really seem to understand red winemaking (and grapegrowing!!!!) well make some excellent ones.

Tom: Thanks for joining in the fun of WBW this time around, and with a local winery.

I love that you tasted a wine (07 Vincent) because you wanted to give it another shot. I'm guessing that's pretty rare in the tasting room setting. Must be the scientist in you, right?

Is it me, or does the Finger Lakes region have a few "great red hopes" these days? Lemberger/Blaufrankisch, cab franc and pinot (in the eyes of a few anyway). Maybe things aren't so bad for the region on the red wine front?

Tom - As I recently wrote on the NYCR, my experience mirrors yours with regards to the tasting room experience at Fulkerson. Knowledgeable and friendly staff, gorgeous room, interesting range of wines. You bought quite a haul; I'll let you grab the tab in our next get-together, Stipend Man. :)

I also enjoyed the Vignoles and bought a bottle. And like you, I was a bit let down by the Riesling. Their Riesling is the definition of Dry, but to me it was unbalanced and lacked depth.

Fulkerson is a hard-working and friendly operation and this was a nice report.
